Yeosu EXPO 2012: Reflections (Part 1)

expo3 Back in 2010, there was the “City Makes Life Better” Expo held in Shanghai. I was so excited that I purchased tickets in advance. However, according to the news, there were so many people that normally it would take people 6-8 hours to wait for a premier pavilion. Not only that, the trip itself would be costly, which made me make the decision: not to go.

How fortunate I am to be a member in the Woosong Herald, which offers its staff the most wonderful incentives. This time, it offered all its staff a 2 day-1 night trip to Namwon and the Yeosu Expo.

Everyone was so inspired that no one was late for the scheduled departure: 1:00 on May 11th. After one day staying in Namwon, we headed to Yeosu the next morning. We were worried whether there would be a traffic jam due to the opening ceremony, but it turned out that was not necessary. We arrived at 9:30 and we were able to enjoy the expo for a good eight hours.

This year's expo theme was related to marine life and ecology, which is easy to understand because Yeosu is a city on the coastline. It is about time for humans to pay more attention to the ecology as well.

The first thing that impressed me was that there were so many volunteers. Even in the restroom, a volunteer would never leave his position, which made me “uncomfortable.” It was not proper to ask him questions in the restroom, so I made a short interview with another volunteer, Chonghua Lee, at the gate. According to her, not all the volunteers are paid for this event, some of them regard this as their temporary job with a sustainable pay, others were simply helping for one day or two.

“This is my current job. I am doing this because I like to meet people. While I am doing this, I feel I am doing something good for everyone. I am very proud of myself,” said Lee, a 27 year-old volunteer.

We made two appointments for the Theme Pavilion and Aquarium. After waiting for about 10 minutes, we were able to visit the Theme Pavilion. It was scientific, informative and entertaining at the same time. In the Theme Pavilion, there were all sorts of important facts about marine life and ecology. And there was an adorable dugong telling the mysteries about the sea.

After this, we visited many international pavilions, all of which were connected to the theme.IMG_9206

The most visit-worthy part of the Yeosu Expo, in my opinion, would be the Firm Section. All high technology-supported shows were there, like Samsung and Hyundai. The employees were not allowed to take any interviews, so I chatted with two of them, wanting to know more about the big companies’ perspectives about marine life.

“Seventy percent of the earth is covered by water; who dominates the sea dominates the earth,” said an anonymous, ambitious employee from Samsung.

“Our mission in [the] 21st century is unlocking the mysteries about the sea,” said another employee form Hyundai.

It was an interesting and meaningful trip. All I hope is I could visit the Yeosu Expo again shortly and explore the rest of it.

Play Hard, Work Harder

3842509936_c7255b8f6b_b copy Who loves to play? I think everyone does. Unless you are a workaholic, I am sure that you love to play. ‘Play,’ used in this way, does not mean playing with dolls but doing what you like and spending time on your hobbies. On the other hand, ‘work’ means not just working like an employee, but also cooking, washing dishes, learning, doing homework and doing our duties as a university student.

In university, the student who works (or studies) really hard is sometimes called a “nerd.” The definition of a nerd, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is “a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious.” Being a nerd, or we may say, being a very diligent person, can bring some benefits to your life. A nerd usually has better grades, because they study all the time. He or she stands out on the exam, is able to maintain a high G.P.A., and may eventually have a better opportunity to get a job. Like the definition above, however, a nerd who many times lacks some social skills, cannot communicate well enough with others, and goes through a hard time developing good relationships with others.

In contrast to the nerd, there are some students who really love to play. They live their life to the fullest. They do whatever they like. They do their assignments at the very last minute. They feel like there is no tomorrow. Some of them party every night; while some of them do their hobbies crazily, spending all their money and time. They have lots of friends. But everything always has two sides. The party-goer’s G.P.A. is not that good; they pretty much skip most of their classes, postpone their assignments, and obviously, are not very responsible.

In my opinion, having a balanced lifestyle is the best. You can play wherever, whatever, however and whenever. But, since you have duties, especially as a university student, you should make sure you do the work for your future. “Play Hard and Work Hard” is not enough. You should play hard and work harder to be the best among other students. If you do this, you can develop your talents and minimize your weaknesses, and compete on global level.

Is it hard? It all depends on you. I have tried it already. I still love to do my hobbies, party and go out with friends; meanwhile, I have the highest G.P.A. score in class. What will you do then?

Hanhwa Eagles’ Power Analysis for the Championship

Untitled-1 The Hanhwa Eagles look to recover from a 13-year slump this year with their addition of Park-Chan Ho, the first Korean player in Major League Baseball. The Eagles beat the KIA Tigers 3:2 in a May 8 game, which saw Eagles batter Kim Tae-gyun hit a solo homer in the 6th inning. Although Eagles pitcher Ryu Hyeon Jin, who is recently recovered from an injury, allowed for two points at the top of the 7th, Eagles batter Lee Yeo-sang brought them the win with a drive to right field.

In addition to Park, this year has seen Eagles’ scout Yoo Chang-sik add several new recruits, including: pitcher Ryu, catcher Choe Seung Hwan, and first baseman Jang “The Sniper” Sun-ho. Choe, who comes from the Doosan Bears, has been hitting particularly well so far this season.

Hanhwa will also be depending upon veteran second baseman Han Sang-Hoon and veteran shortstop Lee Dae-su, both of whom did well last year.

Hanwha has been waiting a long time for a championship. Their new lineup has a lot of power and 2012 may very well see them take it.

Woosong Library's Renovation

On March 19, 2012 Woosong library was opened after its renovation. Before the renovation, students were studying on the 6th floor. Originally, the 6th floor was the data reading room. However, during renovations, the 6th floor was temporarily changed to a study hall.

Due to the renovations, the library now has many improvements. For example, on the 4th floor, in the study hall, there are many tables and chairs replaced with new ones. Also, the 3rd floor now has many tables, with electrical sockets after its change into the digital data reading room, notebook zone. The multiplex room has TVs and sofas, so you can watch DVDs anytime you want. In the Digital zone, you can use the state-of-the-art computers for your assignments. There are two group study rooms. If you want to use it for your group work, you should reserve the room at least two hours before your group meets, and you should have at least five members in your group.

One of the biggest changes is the library's usage system. Starting 2012.5.21(Mon) the library will run on a reserved seat system. The trial run period is 2012. 4. 30(Mon) - 5. 20(Sun). Automatic seat dispensers are located on the 1st floor lobby center; in the 3rd floor digital data reading room (east side), and in the 4th floor general reading room (east side). Once you have a seat reserved, you can use your seat for up to three hours. You can extend your time four times at most. To reserve your seat, you need your student ID or reading permission certificate. You can get more information about student ID or reading permission certificate from Woosong university student welfare facilities at 630-9876.

I had an interview with one of the students, Jeong Im Jang(22). She usually spends 4 - 5 hours in the library on weekdays. She said, “The library was remodeled so now there are new chairs and tables. It makes more studiable surrounding for study. Two things what I most like about this remodeling are that I can use computer in the Digital zone and I can watch movies with my friends in the Multiplex. I already watched the movie with my friends when the time in-between classes. There is one thing that I think it’s unnecessary is the designated seat system. I always spend time more than 3 hours when I’m in the library but always I have to extend my time. And most people do not follow this system and just sit anywhere they want.”

GEEC TOEIC: 700 Students Chose This Class

About 700 students gather every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30 P.M. because of the GEEC TOEIC class. GEEC TOEIC is an English language program that has been running at Woosong University since spring of 2010. This spring semester, however, the class has received especial interest from students. The biggest changes are that student participation has increased and the quality of teaching has improved.

“GEEC TOEIC was made to improve TOEIC scores, gain the graduate certification grade, and for students who want to learn more English. The first time, GEEC only interested students who wanted to have a graduate certification grade or participation points for their regular English classes so the student’s passion was not high,” explained Professor DeokGyo Jeong, who is in charge of GEEC TOEIC class at Woosong University. “Of course, some students wanted a good TOEIC score but students didn’t participate because this class started in the evening.”

Jeong added, “With support from the government, students can receive many benefits. For example, the best benefit was students who received the best score last fall and winter semesters went abroad to study at the University of Malaya in Malaysia for about one month.”

The college tuition and dormitory costs were paid for and students paid only living expenses and round-trip plane ticket costs. Students who went to Malaysia will never forget living there.

“GEEC means Green Evening English Class. Even though the class still starts in the evening, the participation of students dramatically increased this semester. Freshman and sophomore’s participation was especially high so I was really surprised and delighted. Not only because of the benefit for them but also because of the passion of students for their English study. Students are really studying hard this semester,” said Jeong.

Last semester, GEEC TOEIC focused on TOEIC and TOEIC Speaking but now GEEC focuses not only on TOEIC but also practical English.

“Due to the passion of students, the school decided to teach not only TOEIC but also practical English with native speakers to freshman and sophomore students. Juniors and seniors who are approaching graduation are studying TOEIC more specifically by level in their GEEC TOEIC class,” said Jeong.

This semester’s GEEC also received government funding, so students who received the best score in GEEC are going to go abroad to study. It has not yet been decided where to go to study abroad. Students are studying hard with expectation for what they will experience.

“GEEC TOEIC is for all Woosong students, so we will steadily develop GEEC TOEIC to focus not only on their graduation certification grade but also their development,” said Jeong. “We hope that they can improve their English ability in GEEC TOEIC class. We also hope that the rate of graduation and employment increases by taking GEEC TOEIC.”
